Black Baza

Aviceda leuphotes

Lang Baza
黑冠鹃隼

Least Concern

This small raptor has black, white, and chestnut markings, hunts insects in flight, and migrates in flocks through Southeast Asia, including Malaysia.
It has a distinctive crest, dark body, white breast band, and patterned underside (males have more white, females more chestnut bands).

It migrates through West Malaysia during the months of end October to November, including Seberang Perai, in huge flocks of up to hundreds and even approaching one thousand.

It hunts insects with aerial sallies, but occasionally take lizards, frogs and fruits and berries. It is one of the few omnivorous raptor species. Most will transit (on passage) through Seberang Perai but a small proportion will winter, in small flocks of up to tens, in Seberang Perai, most often in mangroves and secondary forest and scrubland.
