Birdwatching in Seberang Perai

The coastal wetlands of Seberang Perai are among the best places in Penang to watch birds. The mudflats at Teluk Air Tawar–Kuala Muda (TAT–KM) are recognised as an Important Bird and Biodiversity Area, and the mangroves, riverbanks and surrounding farmland each bring their own species.

Migratory shorebirds and waders gather on the mudflats in large numbers, feeding as the tide falls. Egrets, herons and kingfishers are present all year, and the mangroves hold quieter residents such as the Mangrove Pitta and Mangrove Whistler. Migratory birds arrive from around September and most have left by April. Tides matter more than the time of day: birds feed on the exposed mudflats as the tide drops and gather closer to shore as it rises. Resident species can be seen throughout the year.

Feeding and resting birds are easily disturbed, and a flock forced to fly loses energy it needs for a long migration. Keep your distance, stay on paths and tracks, keep noise down, and never use recorded calls or drones near roosting flocks. A local guide will know where to stand without putting the birds to flight.
