The Black-thighed Falconet is a tiny, sparrow-sized bird of prey found in West Malaysia and also East Malaysia, known for its striking black thighs and white chest, often seen hunting insects from exposed perches in lowland forests, woods, mangrove and swamp forests and cultivated areas. These social raptors are one of the smallest, distinctive for their shrike-like appearance, feeding on large insects and occasionally small vertebrates.
Although often mentioned as socialble raptors, more likely they are part of a closed family group. The Black-thighed Falconet’s breeding involves using old barbet/woodpecker holes laying 2-5 eggs, which fledge in about 3-4 weeks after a 3-4 week incubation.
It is fairly common throughout Seberang Perai, including the Teluk Air Tawar – Kuala Muda Coastal IBA, but they are not found on the Island.
