A widespread migratory small shorebird known for its distinctive tail-bobbing, found near freshwater and coastal habitat across Europe, Asia, Africa, and Australia but not the Americas. A small, brown-grey wader with a white belly, white wing bars, and dark legs and flying off with a stiff-winged flight low over water and often giving off a characteristic and distinctive, high-pitched, ringing “swee-wee-wee” or “pi-wi-we” three-note call sometimes giving a shorter single “sweet” note if just landing.

In West Malaysia and Seberang Perai it is very widespread and consistently seen in suitable wet or marshy habitat including small sub-urbau drains, small stream, but found in small numbers and unlikely to be in flocks greater than ten.
