Least Concern

The Stork-billed Kingfisher is Malaysia’s largest kingfisher, easily identified by its huge red bill, vibrant blue wings, and chestnut/buff plumage, inhabiting rivers, mangroves, and coasts for fish, crabs, and frogs. Known for its loud, laughing call and territorial behavior, it’s a striking, common resident in both Peninsular Malaysia and Borneo.

It is very common but in lower density compared to the White-throated- and Collared- Kingfishers, all over Seberang Perai, including inland areas, and on the Island. It is the largest Kingfisher species in the region, the Brown-winged Kingfisher that is found only on the Langkawi Islands is slightly smaller. Despite being fairly big and very vocal few of its nest are found or recorded, which is usually a hole in a tree trunk.
