The White-bellied Sea-eagle is Malaysia’s largest resident raptor, easily identified by the adult plumage with its white head, belly, and tail contrasting with grey back and black wingtips, soaring in a V-shape with a short wedge tail, found along coasts, estuaries, and inland waterways. They primarily eat fish and sea snakes but also reptiles, waterbirds and shorebirds.
Juvenile white-bellied sea eagles are mostly mottled brown, unlike adults’ stark white and grey, with creamy streaks on their head and underparts, a mix of brown/white/ginger on their underwings, and a white tail with dark tips, gradually transitioning to adult plumage over several years until full adult markings appear around their fourth or fifth year.
It will nest near their feeding “grounds” consisiting which are large bodies of water, including the coastal sea, large rivers, lakes, reservoirs and marshy and swampy areas. They will nest on a variety of species of tall trees , and tall man-made structures, like telco towers, electrical transmission pylons, structures over water or sea, like bridge towers. It usually lay two eggs and more often than not will successfully raise two eaglets.
Penang state have one of the highest concentration of White-bellied Sea-eagle in the world, especially at the Penang National Park. At the Teluk Air Tawar – Kuala Muda IBA a communal roost of Juveniles and adults of up to fifteen was once recorded.
