Least Concern

The Five-lined Threadfin Bream is a popular marine fish from the Indo-Pacific known for its fine, sweet flesh, often sold as Kerisi Jalur Lima, or known as “Ang Nee” among the Chinese-Teochew community in West Malaysia, and is identified by pinkish bodies with distinctive mauve lines, long fins, and being excellent for steaming, baking, barbequing or frying.

It has a fine-textured flesh, delicate, sweet flavor, not overly “fishy” but some will find it have a distintive taste. It is sometimes used as the ingredient fish in the local “otak’otak” dish, where fish fillet or slices of it are steamed or baked in an egg coconut milk mix.

Very common at fish market throughout Seberang Perai, although sizes may be getting smaller. It can be confused with the similar looking goatfishes.
