Least Concern

The Sulphur Goatfish is a small, schooling marine fish primarily found in the Indo-West Pacific. It is distinguished by two prominent yellow stripes running along its sides and a silvery-greenish or pinkish body. Like all goatfishes, it has two “whisker-like” chin barbels used to sift through sand for prey. In this species, the barbels are typically white.

They inhabit coastal waters, estuaries, and sandy-muddy bottoms. This species typically forms schools and is known for its ability to change color rapidly to camouflage with its surroundings and avoid predators.

They are of minor commercial importance and are marketed fresh or processed into products like fish balls and artifical “crab stick” in Southeast Asia including West Malaysia. It is usually fried and can be very tasty if fresh, with flaky white meat with a distintive taste like other goatfish.
