The white-throated kingfisher is a medium-to-large kingfisher. Adults have a dark chestnut head, flanks, and belly, with a contrasting white patch on the throat and breast. The back, wings, and tail are a brilliant turquoise-blue. It has a large, powerful red bill and red legs. Its flight is rapid and direct. The bird is very vocal.

Its diet is very varied, including frogs, insects, smaller snakes, worms, mouse, even small birds and nestlings. It will nest on embankemnets, paddy field and river bunds, and river banks and termites mounts.

It is extremely common throughout Seberang Perai but less so in a purely built-up urban habitat.
