A fairly large waterbird under the stork family, a recent (about 15 years ago) natural expansion of its range from Thailand to Malaysia, for resaons not conclusively proven, including flood in Thailand, their food resources, which is mainly snails were wipe out.
Adults are more greyish white with glossy black wings whilst the juveniles and sub-adults are greyish. They are know for their unique gap at its bill which is less prominent in juveiles. Its main diet are snails, including the introduced and invasive golden apple snails found all over paddy field and waterways.
There is a big heronry of nesting Openbill at the Teluk Air Tawar – Kuala Muda coastal IBA, with about one thousand nest. This would give a total population of three to four thousand in Seberang Perai. Flocks of up to one thousand have been sighted flying over paddy fields at Permatang Pauh area.
It have been observed to forage at the coastal mudflats at the IBA but rather infrequently.
