The Greater Flameback is a large, striking woodpecker with a robust body and a long, pointed, lead-grey bill known for its vivid golden-yellow back, red rump, and a loud, high-pitched trill call. The underparts are white with dark chevron or stripe markings. The face is whitish with a black pattern, and it has a mottled black-and-white nape (hindneck). The male features a bright crimson red crown and crest whilst the female has a crown that is black, spotted with white dots.
It is an active bird that forages on tree trunks and branches for insects and larvae using its powerful bill. It can be similar to the Common Flameback but it can have an apparent fiercer look and also the black pattern of the white face is different. Although found it various forested and wooded habitat in particular mangroves it is not found in suburban areas unlike the Common Flameback.
It is found but in smaller proportion compared to the Common Flameback, in all district of the coastal mangroves of Seberang Perai, and occasionally the freshwater swamp at Air Hitam Dalam.
