Least Concern

The leopard cat is a small wild cat native to Asia, about the size of a domestic cat, known for its distinctive leopard-like spotted coat. It is more slender and long legged compared to a domestic cat. They have a small head with a short, narrow muzzle, round ears that are black on the back with a central white spot, and two narrow black cheek stripes.

They are primary nocturnal or crepsular and are solitory except for females with kittens, and are found in forest, mangroves, orchards and plantations but not in sub-urban or urban area. They will hunt small animals like mouse and rats, insects, ground bugs, and also birds they do raid chicken coops in rural areas.

They are difficult or near impossible to tame even when starting as kittens. The cross bred “Bengal cat” is presumably hydrids of the Leopard cat with the domestic cat.

It is fairly common throughout Seberang Perai, including all the landward mangroves habitat. Although considered as Least Concern it is a fully protected animal in West Malaysia.
