The Common Kingfisher has a vast range across Europe, Asia, and North Africa, breeding widely but migrating from colder northern areas to warmer southern regions like Africa, the Middle East, and Southeast Asia for winter.
It is a small, vibrant blue-and-orange kingfisher with a large head, short tail, and long bill known for diving for fish and shrimps/prawns.
It is a fairly common migrant to West Malaysia, including Seberang Perai and the Island, found throughout wetlands and water habitat, natural and manmade, like paddy fields, reservoirs, and water detention ponds. It may sometimes be mistaken for the local blue-eared kingfisher, but if seen in more completely open habitat like vast paddy fields, it is more likely to be the “common”.
Although populations of certain areas in their home breeding grounds may have a noticeable decline, the number of sightings of the common kingfisher to Seberang Perai and West Malaysia remains stable.
