Near Threatened

The Bar-tailed Godwit is a common migratory tall wader (when compared to those of nearly the same size), to the west coast of West Malaysia, known for its long, slightly upturned bill and brick-red (breeding) or grey-brown (non-breeding) plumage, easily spotted probing mudflats. It is identifiable by its white rump and barred tail in flight when compared to the Black-tailed Godwit and the slightly smaller Asian Dowitcher.

This wader is famous for being the longest in time and distance for any migratory shorebird; flying over 10,000 km (6,000 miles) from Alaskan/Siberian breeding grounds to wintering sites in New Zealand, Australia, and East Asia, then returning after fueling up. The returned flight usually involves some stops.

It is a very common winter migrant to the Teluk Air Tawar – Kuala Muda IBA, bit less common in other parts of Seberang and also the Island. Flocks of up to hundreds have been frequently recorded.
