It is a tiny, migratory shorebird, with its bright orange-red breeding plumage on its head, neck, and breast, though the colours may be less intense when it reaches here, it will look plain gray and white in “winter”, December onwards. One of the smallest wader you will find visiting our mudflats and shores. It is also known as the Rufous-necked Stint.
It has short, straight black bill; dark legs. with a white V-shape on the back (breeding), and dark primary coverts creating a wrist spot in flight (winter).Feeds rapidly by stabbing the mud for invertebrates, and small crustaceans.
Very common all over the Teluk Air Tawar – Kuala Muda coast IBA, in huge flocks and total number up to three thousand each season. Also common throughout other coastal areas of Seberang Perai but not in such high numbers.
