Least Concern

A medium size kingfiher, with a wide range from the Red Sea across southern Asia to Melanesia and northern Australia. It is commonly found in coastal areas, particularly mangrove swamps, but also adapts to gardens, parks, and open woodlands, and even much further inland. It is known for its brilliant blue or greenish-blue upper parts, a prominent white collar around the neck (which gives it its name), and white underparts. Diet It preys on fish, crustaceans (like small crabs), insects, and small amphibians, often diving from a conspicuous perch to catch its meal. Behavior It is a vocal bird, known for its loud, chattering calls.

Very commom throughout Seberang Perai, all over the coastal mangroves and all the major rivers of all three districts. Usually requires some “tree or plant cover” in thier habitat. Will nest on any embankment, rotten tree trunks, termites mound. Truly one of the sound of our coastal mangroves, rivers and wetlands.
