The Javan Pond Heron is a small-medium heron found in South and Southeast Asia.
In its non-breeding plumage it has a brownish body, streaked neck, pale underparts, whilst in its breeding plumage it has white wings contrasting with its dark chestnut head and neck. In flight the sudden flash of white wings is very noticeable, as in common with all Pond Heron species found in West Malaysia. It tends to favour coastal habitat.
Feeds on fish, frogs, insects, crustaceans, and other small aquatic animals
It is a fairly common winter visitor to West Malaysia with sparse record of breeding along the west coast, at Seberang Perai it can be found during the summer period, an indication of breeding here perhaps.
