Least Concern

The crested goshawk is a tropical bird of prey found across Asia, It was formerly placed in the genus Accipiter with the scientific name Accipiter trivirgatus. Based on recent molecular phylogenetic studies, the species has been moved to the resurrected genus Lophospiza to ensure scientific classification groups are monophyletic (meaning they contain all descendants of a common ancestor).

This raptor has short, broad wings and a long tail, which are adaptations for maneuvering through dense forest environments. Its most distinctive feature is a small crest, which is more visible in profile. Adults have a grey head, a white throat with a black mesial (central) stripe, and whitish underparts patterned with rufous streaks on the breast and bars on the belly.

One of the few resident “Accipiter” of West Malaysia, with increasing breeding records for Seberang Perai – all Districts, and also on the Island. Nesting records including gardens and parks, and even sometimes along fairly busy sub-urban roads. They supposed prefer to built their nest on a tree along a river or stream. A few eggs are laid and often two chicks will successfully fledged.

The reasons for these near sudden increase in breeding records and population is not exactly know, but could be due to the increase availabilty of prey, including plantain squirrels and rodents, due to changing habiatat and other factors.
