Least Concern

The Great Eared-nightjar is a large, nocturnal bird found in northern region of West Malaysia, characterized by its distinctive ear-like feather tufts, huge eyes, and camouflage plumage, resembling a dragon or mythical creature while hunting insects at night and resting camouflaged on the ground among leaf litter or some low horizontal branches during the day. It’s a resident on the northern part of the Malay Peninsula, known for its distinctive calls and upright perching posture. It is found in lowlands including forests, orchards and scrubs of South and Southeast Asia, including the Philipines.

It is uncommon throughout Seberang Perai, with records over all three districts, north, central and south, occuring in all coastal mangroves and its landward habitat. It prefers more open and wooded areas but not in completely open fields and grasslands except when for hunting for insects over them. Seberang Perai is the southern edge of their range in west of West Malaysia, with fewer if any records much further south.
