Least Concern

The White-winged Tern is a widespread seabird known for its distinct black-and-white breeding plumage and paler non-breeding appearance, feeding on insects and small aquatic animals in freshwater wetlands across Eurasia, wintering in Africa, Asia, and Australia, and characterized by its slow dainty flight and skimming low over water for food.

Breeding adults are strikingly black with white shoulders and rump; non-breeding birds are whitish with gray patches and black “earmuffs” or “headphones”. In non-breeding plumage it is more white overall with those black “earmuffs/headphones” and grey wing patches.

It is very common all over West Malaysia during the northern temperate countries migratory season, flocks of hundreds and even thousands can be observered in the coastal seas off north west Peninsular Malaysia, that is Kedah, Perlis, and Penang. It is very common all over the coastal areas of Seberang Perai, where they will hunt over the coastal waters, and resting during low tide on those exposed mudflats, and during high tide they will fly into the landward side paddyfields. They will frequent those inland aquaculture ponds.

About 5000 thousand or more white-winged terns are found along the Seberang Perai coast every migratory season.
