Least Concern

The scaly-breasted munia is a small, highly social finch. Native to tropical Asia, its name comes from the scale-like markings on its breast and belly.
Adults have dark brown upper parts and a stout bill. Their underparts are white with a dark, scaly pattern. Juveniles lack these markings and are a plain light brown.

They inhabit open areas like grasslands, rice paddies, gardens, and scrub forming flocks of up to 100 and usually roosting together mainly eat grass seeds but also consume berries and insects. They are considered pests when they feed on rice crops.

They are year-round breeders, with shared nest building (domed grass/leaf structures) by both sexes, followed by mutual incubation, and feeding regurgitated food to chicks that fledge in about three weeks. Nesting in pairs within dense grass or trees, often colonially.

They are very common throughout Seberang Perai, usually associating with other open grassland munia species.
