Least Concern

The Mangrove Blue Flycatcher (Cyornis rufigastra) is found throughout Southeast Asia, with a range spanning from the Thai-Malay Peninsula to Indonesia and the Philippines. Although not rare, the development of mangrove habitat for aquaculture ponds, industries, infrastructure, housing, etc may threathend its present IUCN Least Concern status.

The Mangrove Blue Flycatcher is a small bird found in coastal, mangrove, and nearby or contagious swamp or mrashland habitats in Malaysia. They are characterized by their vibrant blue and orange plumage. Males have bright blue upperparts and orange-colored throats/chests whilst females are similar but have paler orange underparts and a pale patch between the eye and bill. They are known for singing fluty, melodious songs and producing fast, buzzing, or clicking calls which is fairly generic to “blue flycatchers”.

The Seberang Perai Teluk Air Tawar – Kuala Muda IBA represent the northern terminus of the Mangrove Blue Flycatcher, as there are few if any documentated records north of it. It is has scatterd distribution along the coast of West Malaysia, being rare on the east coast.
