Least Concern

The White-headed Munia known in Malay as Pipit Uban is a small songbird found throughout West Malaysia (but not East Malaysia), Thailand, and Indonesia. It is a gregarious, seed-eating species commonly found in wetlands, reed beds, grasslands, and agricultural areas like rice paddies at lowlands level.

It has a distinctive white head, hence its sometimes colloquial name of “cigar-head” munia, and a throat with a milk-chocolate brown body, a large black patch on the belly, and a heavy, silver-grey bill.

They are gregarious, often forming large mixed flocks with other munia species (like the Scaly-breasted and Chestnut Munias) during rice harvests, breeding year round in the Malay Peninsula, constructing dome-shaped nests made of woven grass.

It can often be found in open areas in Malaysian cities and botanical gardens, but they seems to be beoming less common in more urban area due to clearing of hedges and scrub.
