Least Concern

The Asian Brown Flycatcher is an adaptable, insectivorous, migratory bird thriving in diverse Asian forest edges, woodlands, and even urban parks, breeding in temperate zones (China, Siberia, Japan) and wintering in tropical South and Southeast Asia, using aerial sallies to catch insects, but also eating small fruits, and inhabiting tree cavities or forks for nesting. Its ecology shows flexibility, using various broadleaf, mixed forests, plantations, and scrub habitats, common in parks during winter, demonstrating a wide range of ecological niches.

a small, migratory bird (13cm) with plain grey-brown upperparts, whitish underparts, a distinct white eye-ring, and a broad, dark bill, often seen cocking its tail and flicking wings from exposed perches in forests or open areas during winter (Aug-Apr). Its subtle plumage provides excellent camouflage, making it a classic, small flycatcher known for catching insects mid-air.
Key Identification Features:
Size & Shape: Small, with a relatively large head, big dark eye, and a longer tail than other small flycatchers.

In Malaysia:
It’s a common winter visitor and passage migrant, present from around August to April.
You might spot them in various locations, from city parks to forest edges.
Distinguishing from Similar Birds:
Its combination of a plain face, clear white eye-ring, and unmarked throat helps distinguish it from other brownish flycatchers.
