Least Concern

The Little Egret has a widespread, expanding range across Africa, Europe, Asia, and Australasia, thriving in wetlands, coastal areas, and paddy fields. They are common in southern Europe, the Middle East, and Asia, with established populations in the UK, Australia, and parts of the Caribbean/Americas.

It is a small, elegant white heron with distinctive black legs, bright yellow feet, and a slender black bill. In breeding plumage, the Little Egret is characterized by its all-white feathers, featuring two long, slender, white plumes on the nape. During courtship, they develop long, lax “aigrette” plumes on the breast and back, with the facial skin (lores) turning from blue-grey to reddish.

Very common throughout West Malaysia, inlcuding Seberang Perai and on the Island, although they tend to have a slight preference for coastal habitat rather than inland freshwater, although they are common all over. It is a very common breeding resident.
