The scalloped hammerhead shark (Sphyrna lewini) is a coastal and semi-oceanic species of hammerhead shark recognizable by the distinct, indented “scalloped” central groove along the front edge of its wide, hammer-shaped head.

The scalloped hammerhead shark is a highly specialized marine predator known for its indented head shape and social schooling behavior, but it currently faces severe population declines globally. The species faces intense pressure from commercial and artisanal fishing.

Rather than patrolling the deep blue walls sought out by scuba divers, scalloped hammerheads in West Malaysia heavily utilize shallow coastal benthic habitats, sandy substrates, and estuarine environments near river mouths. It is fairly common at markets in Sebeerang Perai,. It is considered as crtically endangered, and is usually taken at our coastal waters as a bycatch.
